Getting into the cohort 4 of the SCA mentorship program is a dream come true for me. I remember Steven talking to me about applying for this cohort few weeks before the assessment task began and even following up on me to make sure I submitted the task before the due date.

Prior to the beginning of this mentorship I had doubts regarding everything i knew in the Data Science field. I wasn’t sure if I was making any progress or I just kept on learning different things.

Well, the mentorship started and we were grouped into several groups and attached to each group is a mentor. My Mentor is a very amazing person with this positive mindset that has sent every doubt I have had away. The first Month has been very amazing yet challenging in a very productive way, I remember how I felt after submitting my very first Mentee task(lol!)

HOW THE FIRST MONTH OF MENTORSHIP HAS BEEN LIKE FOR ME:

  • Python: The first week task was testing our python skills and it was a bit challenging for me. (Little did I know that it’d be the littlest challenge i’d come across in the mentorship program). The task made me revisit courses, do research and go through my jotter. It wasn’t something so hard or even new to my brain but the space of inadequate hands-on practice was left out. The exercises served as a great way of helping think in the problem-solving direction and also help me refresh my python knowledge.
  • Mathematics in Data Science: The second week required me to write an article on a mathematics topic(concept) in Data Science. It could be on probability, statistics or any other mathematical concept. I wrote on Statistics in Data Science. I thought this wouldn’t be an issue with me because I used to play around with writing forgetting that writer’s block is real. It took me 3 days to be able to put something together and even after that, I had to edit was another battle on it on. After a lot of corrections I was able to come up with this.
  • EDA ON UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN THE US: The third week was about a detailed analysis on a dataset. My first attempt was not good enough as the analysis I did wasn’t giving enough insights on the dataset and it would not be understanding enough for every technical and non-technical person that goes through it. My Mentor had to take her time to take me through what EDA really entails. After which I had to go back and re-analyze the dataset. Going back to do that gave me deep insights on what EDA is and made me understand the dataset more. You can find my report on the analysis here.
  • ANALYSIS ON NETFLIX DATASET: To give profound knowledge on the analysis done in the third week, My mentor decided we analyze another dataset. This was quite easier because I now understand the concept of data analysis better. This particular task needed me to understand the dataset and then make relatable insights off the datasets which has been done. You can find the code on my github.

This First Month was a lot yet nothing compared to the 2 months i have ahead of me. I am very grateful for my ever encouraging mentor Countess Olufunmi, she has been nothing but amazing and positive all through the first month(E for Energy!!). My fellow mentees has been awesome too and they are so vast in this field. I am thrilled at how much I still have to learn from them. It’s been a lot but i’m very grateful this is part of my growth process.

Thank you very Much for reading, have you ever gotten into a mentorship program? If yes, kindly summarize your experience in the comment section, If no, let me know if you plan on getting into one. I’d be reading.
